Michael Thonet No. 20 Bentwood Chair by Ton (Upholstered Seat and Back)
The Michael Thonet No. 20 Bentwood Chair is widely used in cafes, restaurants, offices, and homes due to its aesthetic appeal and increased comfort from the upholstered ring in the back.
In 1860, Gebruder Thonet introduced a bentwood rocking chair that would take this piece from being something for the aristocracy to a chair of comfort for the middle class. This marketing to the masses approach became the cornerstone of the company, both through their first rocking chair and the No. 14 Bentwood Chair. The No 14 Bentwood Chair itself eventually attained the name “chair for mass consumption”. Deviations from the No.14 Bentwood Chair, such as the No. 20 Bentwood Chair, soon grew in popularity as well.
